Goldring Unveils New Ethos SE Cartridge For Vinyl Record Fans

Oct 14, 2024

The new Goldring Ethos SE sits a the pinacle of the company's range of moving coil cartridges.

Vinyl aficionados will be excited by today’s news from Goldring concerning the launch of the brand’s new Ethos SE cartridge. This Special Edition sits at the pinnacle of the company’s award-winning range of moving coil cartridges. New features and upgrades include pure silver coils, low-reluctance pole shoes and an aircraft-grade aluminum casing.

Goldring claims the Ethos SE sets new standards in terms of how much detail it can retrieve from a record. It also offers exceptional channel separation alongside low coloration. When judged against cartridges costing much more, Goldring claims the Ethos SE produces an immersive, musical experience.

The Ethos SE features new pure silver coils with fewer windings for higher conductivity. The effective tip mass is lower and the internal impedance of the pick-up has been improved for better tracking and a greater transient response. The low-mass cross-armature core is made using Swedish iron and improves channel separation for a more realistic soundstage.

A vital line-contact diamond stylus provides a low tip mass with a large contact area that boosts high-frequency response while cutting distortion and coloration. New low-reluctance pole-shoes produce a smooth and extended frequency response. The cartridge body is crafted from low-resonance aluminium which means lower density and extra rigidity.

The pure silver coils used in the Ethos SE have a lower effective tip mass. Goldring uses Ag 9999 pure silver coil windings with less internal resistance and a lower mass from fewer windings. The coils have a significantly lower mass than standard copper windings. Goldring says the Ethos SE can negotiate or ‘track’ a record groove without losing contact. The result is a greater transient response, plus a reduction in resonance throughout the frequency range.

The Ethos SE’s armature is made from Swedish iron in a low-mass, cross shape instead of the more usual and heavier square design. Channel separation is improved for a more realistic stereo soundstage. Goldring claims the high-frequency details are improved, while distortion is reduced and mis-tracking is all but eliminated.

To retrieve the highest frequencies in a recording, the Ethos SE uses a large contact-area diamond stylus with a narrow tip that has a low mass. The vital-shank, nude design has a polyhedral diamond profile. The stylus is connected to the armature with a stiff and lightweight alloy cantilever tube. As well as producing an excellent high-frequency response, distortion, resonance and coloration are also minimized.

Developed during vinyl’s initial popularity, the hand-made GOL-1 generator provides a smooth and extended frequency response. The SE has new pole shoes that enhance the permeability of the metal, producing a lower reluctance magnetic circuit that flattens and extends the frequency response, especially in the upper registers where most of the detail is located.

The GOL-1 generator is housed in a precision-milled 6082-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum body shell. The material was chosen for its lower density and high rigidity. It looks rather splendid with its smart anodized black finish.

Pricing & Availability: The Goldring Ethos SE moving coil cartridge is available now and costs $1,999 / £1,299 / €1,599.
